Summary of the language journals - 20 to 30 sep 2010 -
Through the past two weeks I learned and reviewed a lot of information that I learned before. Also, I learned some new words and I will write it next paragraph.
In the first week, I refreshed my information about writing opinion and essay. Following the structure is really important to impress the reader and give clear details. Also, I focused on grammar because I am weak on it. I feel that I improved a little and I need to study grammar more. From reading part I learned some new words like gadgets, kindle, intuitive, estimate and charity.
In the second week, I learned a new thing which is how to describe a chart. It is very useful for me because I am going to work with a lot of charts next term. Also, I created my own blog and I published almost every thing that I wrote for the last two weeks.
Finally, I really enjoyed lessons and improved specially in grammar. Also, new vocabulary will help me in my studies.
Many Thanks for Marcus and Hilary
That is me
My name is Ali Saleh Alqalaleef. I was born in Saudi Arabia in 1986, I am the oldest son in my family that consists of eleven members, I am single, I hate the noise and I like to be calm and quiet. My home town is Al-Qatif where is my village Al-Jarodiah part of it.
I have completed my studies from elementary to secondary school in KSA. It was really fantastic moments in my life. I faced a lot of problems through my study period like fighting with others. Also, I was an excellent student and school administration awarded me three times in elementary and once in intermediate. During that, I participated in the village club and I played football for three years.
In 2004, I graduated from secondary school and it was important trend in my life. I stayed at home for half year without studying and I felt sorry because I didn't work hard and got excellent GPA in secondary school. It was good for me that my English not that bad, I could speak, read and write, so I got the chance to enter one of the industrial colleges in Saudi Arabia for year and a half. My English improved a lot and I was able to communicate better than before with people. After that, I couldn't continue in it because I failed to pass Math exam twice.
I was so lucky because I got the chance to complete my studies abroad. I had chosen Canada, but the person who was responsible about the program chose New Zealand for me. I was happy with that because my friend had experience about studying in New Zealand.
Right now, I'm here in Kiwi's land to improve my English language and complete my degree in Computer Systems for three years.
My home in Saudi Arabia, in Auckland and my plans for next holiday
This photo taken by me
Firstly, I am going to talk about my home in Saudi Arabia from different sides. I am the oldest boy from a family which consists of nine members. I am still single so I was living at home with my father. Our home is not big so my father is planning to buy a new house in the future. My family is live in a small village which is a part of the city. The population does not exceed 5,000 person. Our village is famous for farming and the old people are working on it. Also, we have modern technology like computers and everything new. The weather in winter is cold and in the summer it is very hot. The humidity sometimes exceeded more than 85%. It is a nice village and people are kind and helpful.
Secondly, I have been living in New Zealand for two months, and I just moved into a home-stay family two three weeks ago. They are very fantastic and give me the freedom to do whatever I want. I hope that I can change the bad ideas about Muslims while I am here in New Zealand.
Thirdly, I do not have any plans right now, but maybe my friend and me will arrange a trip to visit other places in New Zealand. Also, I will attend the Christmas party with my home-stay family, and it will be the first time for me to attend that celebration.

My specialty subject
I'll complete my degree in Bachelor of Computing Systems at Unitec. I got a Diploma in Computer Technical Support from Dammam College of Technology in 2008, so I need two more years to finish it. I've chosen that field because I really like it and I feel that I could do something.
Nowadays, computing field becomes one of the most important subjects in our life. I think my specialty subject is very important because the whole world needs computers. For example, we will find PC's in our homes, hospitals, banks, companies, markets and everywhere. As a result of that, we cannot live today without computers.
In my major, I am going to focus on some subjects that related to programming, networking and multimedia. As an application programmer I'll focus on how to design the program and be able to analyse any bugs that might happen. Networking is a huge field, so I'll concentrate on the principles and basics like how to create a network and solve the problems. Multimedia is an interesting subject from designing banners, websites, advertisements and also video clips. However, it is really enjoyable because it depends on how you could impress people by your designs.
After I finish my degree I will be able to be application programmer, database analyst, information system manager, multimedia developer, network support technician, software designer and systems analyst. These are really wonderful and amusing opportunities.

A brief summary of " The Coldest Place on Earth "
The main characters in this book were Amundsen who was the captain of the Norwegian team and his assistant Bjaaland. On the other side were Scott the Captain of the British team and Oates. At the beginning, Scott planned to travel to the South Pole and discovered it, however Amundsen heard that news and decided to go there. Also, he considered it was a race. When Scott heard that Amundsen wanted to race him, he felt unhappy but accepted the challenge. Amundsen and his partners prepared well, but Scott was just thinking about Amundsen and forgot the race. Scott faced a lot of problems in his way and Amundsen arrived first to the South Pole with small problems which didn't affect his trip. At the end, when Scott discovered that Amundsen arrived before him, he decided to go back home. On his way, he died with three of his assistants because they didn't have enough food and they couldn't walk anymore. In my opinion, it was really useful book and I learned some new words from the book such as depot, sledge and ponies.
My opinion about New Zealand
A lot of tourists and students visiting New Zealand yearly and they go back home happy. I believe that New Zealand is a wonderful place to be in. For example, studying in New Zealand much cheaper than other countries like UK, USA and Canada. In addition, teaching style is amazing and helpful. Also, administrators, teachers are extremely funny and helpful. As a result of that, students won't fell strange if they treat like citizens. On the other hand, people are tremendously kind, smile all the time, and they help you whenever you want help. For instance, before two weeks ago in the middle of the night I lost my homestay and I couldn't found the round, so I just stopped a new zealander and asked him about the road that I want. He smiled and direct me to the right way with a happy face. For these reasons, I think New Zealand is a great country and I would live here for many years if I could. Lovely and peaceful people let you fell that you are at home.

Computer games are very bad for children’s health - 23 Sep 2010
In These days, most children spend a lot of time playing on the computer for hours a day. I think video games are exhausting children intelligence and make them careless. They are not able to determine what health problems could be caused. The most important reasons are that their eyes may be affected, and they won't be able to see clearly in the next few years. In addition, their ears could be damaged because of the high noise. It is a terrific idea to control children and let them play for a short time.

In today’s lecture, the teacher gave us an essay to read and try to solve questions and see how could we understand it. Also, I learned new words like estimate, psychologist, psychotherapy and charity. It is tremendously useful because I may need it in my writing. I reviewed my information how to write and ask someone about his opinion in something. Last thing that I learned was the word forms, and it was nice.

In today’s lesson, I learned about how to write a complete sentence in a good structure. I learned some new words, such us gadgets, kindle and intuitive. These words are essential for me because I might use it in my education and daily life. The teacher said that there were three main things to remember about a sentence. The first was the verb, and it is the heart of the sentence. The second was the subject, and it is always a noun or a noun phrase. There must be a noun. The last was new information - the moral of the sentence - comes after the verb, at the end of the sentence. The most important information is at the end of the sentence.
